Diverter Damper (For HRSG Isolation in CCPP)

The Diverter Damper is used for Heat Recovery Steam Generator (HRSG) isolation in Combined Cycle Power Plants (CCPP). The system installed between the combustion turbine exhaust and the HRSG is known as the By-Pass Stack Exhaust System.

The Diverter Damper (Changeover Valve) is positioned between the Gas Turbine (GT) exhaust and the HRSG, along with Guillotine Isolators, Bypass Stack with silencer, expansion joints, interconnecting transition ducts, and support structures. These systems are suitable for gas turbines of all makes and models.

Gas handling systems often require changeover of gas flow direction to allow access to critical components without shutting down the entire plant. Traditional dampers may pose operational risks if they fail to operate simultaneously. Fouress developed the Diverter Damper to address such challenges in gas turbine installations incorporating heat recovery boilers.

Over time, this concept has been successfully applied in refinery heat recovery plants, pollution control systems, nuclear ventilation systems, and DG sets.

The Diverter Damper improves boiler efficiency by minimizing heat losses through the dump or by-pass stack, and enables on-load maintenance of waste heat boilers, gas turbines, and fans.

The first FOURESS Diverter Damper installation was at BPCL, Mahul Refinery in 1989. Today, there are over 200 successful installations in India and abroad.

Diverter Damper – Features

  • 3-Way Diverter Damper is a unique solution superior to the conventional louver and guillotine combination.
  • Physically impossible to close both outlets with a single flap, ensuring operational safety.
  • Insulated flap minimizes heat loss to bypass stack, improving plant efficiency by 3–5% depending on seal design.
  • Enables on-load maintenance with 100% sealing efficiency using duplex sealing and seal air fans.
  • Two blades with four rows of flexible metallic leaf seals provide pressure-assisted sealing with 99.97%–99.99% efficiency. The interface between seal rows is pressurized by an external seal air fan to ensure 100% man-safe isolation for HRSG maintenance while the Gas Turbine operates in simple cycle.
  • Step-less internal duct dimensions in internally insulated diverters.
  • Good modulation characteristics comparable to louvers.
  • Lower installed cost — simple cycle commissioning possible with diverter installed, enabling early power generation.
  • Handles pressure up to 2000 mm WC.
  • Suitable for temperatures up to 725°C.
  • Standard gas velocity up to 30 m/s; with special arrangements, up to 45 m/s can be handled.
  • Floating blade assembly with toggle lever mechanism for larger units. Additional shaft supports the flap, while drive torque is applied to toggle shaft (significantly lower torque). Drive angle is approximately 120° from open to close.
  • Insulation on both outer blade surfaces minimizes differential expansion.
  • Integrally stiffened plenum suitable for external or internal insulation.
  • Pressure-assisted metal shaft seals with self-aligning outboard bearings and complete external drive system for easy maintenance.
